Cosmelan® Depigmentation Treatment
If you are living with blotchy pigmentation and dark skin spots in San Diego, you know these skin imperfections can spoil your appearance. Hyperpigmentation is often caused by sun exposure, hormones or your genetic background. Some types of hyperpigmentation will disappear naturally, but for many people, discolored patches and spots can last for years or even a lifetime.
Cosmelan® depigmentation treatment from mesoestetic® USA treats blemishes and dark skin spots for San Diego residents with even the most sensitive skin types, quickly reducing the appearance of skin discolorations by up to 95%. Patients also can enjoy a more vibrant and attractive skin complexion after the treatment removes dry and damaged layers of skin.
Your San Diego Cosmelan® treatment works by reducing the amount of melanin in the skin. Melanin is a chemical pigment occurring in the skin, hair and other areas of the body that protects against ultraviolet light. When melanin is produced in localized areas, a condition known as melasma, dark spots and blotchy skin complexion can occur on the cheeks, nose, forehead or other parts of the face and neck. For many years, no product was able to reliably and safely create a uniform skin color for Southern California residents living with melasma or other forms of hyperpigmentation and skin discoloration. Cosmelan® has changed all that.
Achieving smooth, unblemished skin is easier than ever thanks to Cosmelan®. San Diego and other Southern California residents can schedule a consultation with La Jolla Dermatologist Susan M. Stuart, M.D. by calling (858) 623-6333, or contact LaJollaSkin.com online for your appointment. You can enjoy a radiant complexion once dark spots and discoloration are removed.

Your Skin Treatment in San Diego
The Cosmelan® treatment process is completed in two steps. First, Cosmelan 1 cream is applied by Dr. Stuart during your visit to her San Diego dermatology office. This cream is applied evenly to the face, with additional cream spread over spots and blemishes. After the cream has dried to form a mask on your face, you will be able to return home. At home, you will need to leave the cream on your face for between four to eight hours, depending on Dr. Stuart’s instructions based on your skin complexion. Within a few days, the active ingredients in the Cosmelan 1 cream, including azelaic, kojic, phytic and ascorbic acids, arbutine and titanium dioxide, will begin to gently peel away top layers of skin, revealing layers that are more evenly pigmented.
You control the second treatment phase, which maintains your results and continues to lighten your skin. Each day, after washing your face with a mild cleanser, you will apply Cosmelan 2 and Hydravital Factor K cream to the treatment area using light, circular motions. Cosmelan 2 is a maintenance cream that uses titanium dioxide along with kojic acid, phytic acid and ascorbic acid to remove darkened skin as it forms, while the Hydravital Factor K cream moisturizes your face and neck skin during treatment.
It is important that you follow your treatment instructions carefully, and avoid using any other facial creams or skin lightening products. You will follow up with Dr. Stuart about 2 weeks after your first treatment and again about 4 weeks after.
Recovery and Results
Following your treatment at Dr. Stuart’s La Jolla dermatology office, your skin will appear red for a day or two before beginning to peel. Your skin may feel itchy or irritated during this process, though discomfort is well-controlled for most patients by using Hydravital Factor K cream. Lightening of skin spots and blemishes continues over the following weeks and months as you keep using Cosmelan 2.
While Cosmelan® lightens dark skin spots, they may return if you do not continue to take proper care of your skin. For instance, patients still must wear SPF 40 or higher sunscreen whenever they travel outdoors, to minimize the reappearance of melasma. Also, to avoid adverse results, patients must not combine Cosmelan® with any other skin depigmentation treatment. Once treatment is complete, patients are able to enjoy a more luminous, radiant and consistent skin tone.
