Regenerative Medicine: Microfat & Nanofat

When patients require multiple syringes of off-the-shelf injectable dermal fillers like JUVÉDERM® and Restylane®, it’s more cost effective to consider using a patient’s own natural fat to both replace volume and improve skin quality and tone. This process, called fat grafting or fat transfer, offers San Diego residents a safe, effective, and natural alternative to commercial fillers with results that last significantly longer. The following types of fat preparation, both central to the development of regenerative medicine, are effectively used for facial and body rejuvenation:

Microfat

  • Harvest fat from abdomen & flanks with small cannulas
  • Done under local anesthesia in an office setting
  • Fat is washed & filtered
  • Injected into areas of the central face that need volume replacement
  • Used to fill hollowness in temples, cheeks, and along orbit and mouth
  • Corrects loss of volume that facelifts cannot improve
  • Obtain volumes in much larger amounts than with off-the-shelf dermal fillers like Restylane® and JUVÉDERM VOLUMA®
  • Microfat can last many years
  • Another advantage is it contains vital cells responsible for improving the texture and quality of skin
  • These cells also stimulate the creation of natural collagen and improve your wrinkles, texture, and complexion
  • Microfat, which is highly filtered, ultimately destroys the fat cells but leaves behind the valuable elements of skin rejuvenation like mesenchymal stem cells and growth factors involved in the healing and remodeling process of tissues in the body
  • Microfat survival depends upon where and how it’s placed
  • It’s usually placed in the same manner as off-the-shelf fillers; in 1 cc syringes and small gauge needles or cannulas
  • 75-80% of microfat that’s placed in the upper forehead, cheek, and periorbital areas survives long term and often permanently
  • Microfat placed around the mouth in the nasolabial folds, lips, and chin has a long term survival of about 50% due to the movement in these areas
  • Even when some of the microfat resorbs, the rejuvenating effects have a long-term effect in rejuvenating the skin
  • The added benefit: Small problem areas of unwanted fat are also reduced with the mini liposuction process needed to harvest the microfat
  • Recovery is short with mild bruising and swelling, as is seen in facial filler injections

Nanofat

  • The Nanofat can be injected superficially into the skin of the face and neck to improve complexion, tone, and pigmentary issues from sun damage
  • Nanofat can be injected into the eyelid region to improve hyperpigmentation of the skin
  • Nanofat can be used to improve the texture of the neck and décolletage areas
  • Nanofat is often injected along with microfat grafting
  • Nanofat improves skin conditions caused by aging and sun damage
  • Nanofat improves pigmentary conditions in the skin
  • Nanofat reduces scars
