  • Liposuction Candidates

You may be a candidate for liposuction if you are:

    • Generally in good health
    • At or near your target weight
    • Have good muscle tone
    • Have minimal skin laxity
    • Have localized pockets of diet- and exercise-resistant fat in areas such as your thighs, knees, hips, abdomen, chest, chin, and neck

Liposuction, Tummy Tuck, or Body Lift?

One of the most important things patients from La Jolla and San Diego should understand about liposuction is that it cannot tighten loose or sagging skin. If your fat deposits are accompanied by stretched skin, liposuction will only accentuate the drooping appearance. If this is the case, you may want to consider a different body contouring procedure such as a tummy tuck or body lift.

Women who are interested in refreshing their appearance after pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding often choose an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) because it can remove some excess fat deposits, tighten loose skin, and mend abdominal muscles that were stretched during their pregnancy. However, many of these women also choose to combine their abdominoplasty with other procedures like breast augmentation for more comprehensive improvements (a Mommy Makeover).

Another important fact to remember about liposuction is that it is not a weight loss procedure. While body contouring surgery cannot help you lose weight, there is a procedure that can help you refine your new, slimmer contours after weight loss: a body lift. A body lift can remove excess skin and fat from your waist, hips, buttocks, thighs, and abdomen. Liposuction can also be used to fine-tune body lift results.

You demand the best from yourself. Dr. Chaffoo demands the best as well — from himself, from his staff and always for you.

    Choosing Dr. Chaffoo

Your choice of a plastic surgeon should be considered as carefully as the decision to undergo liposuction. Liposuction is a surgical procedure and requires someone with Dr. Chaffoo's extensive experience. As a triple board-certified specialist, few surgeons can match Dr. Chaffoo's credentials.

Don't just take our word for it; see what colleagues and previous patients say.

"Dr. Chaffoo is just an amazing doctor. His expertise is unparalleled. My results are flawless. I knew this was going to be the best thing for me and it was. It was just great! I can't say enough good things about him." — Linda

The Benefit of Viewing Before & After Photos

Researching and choosing a plastic surgeon can be an overwhelming process that involves diligently looking up details about the education, training, experience, and certification of physicians you are considering. Credentials — especially being certified by reputable specialty boards — are very important when considering a surgeon.

Another part of the selection process that shouldn't be overlooked is looking at the surgeon's gallery of before-and-after photos showing results. You should be skeptical of any surgeon who doesn't provide several such examples, especially for common procedures such as liposuction. Most surgeons have a fairly extensive collection of those photos that you can look at during your complimentary consultation, in addition to the photos posted on their websites. By viewing actual patients' results, you can get a good idea of what the surgeon considers his or her best work.

You can also use these pictures to help you determine your own candidacy. If you find images of patients with similar "before" photos to your body, and you like their "after" results, you're probably on the right track.

    Liposuction or CoolSculpting®

Some patients ask if they are better candidates for liposuction or CoolSculpting, a non-surgical fat reduction procedure at our La Jolla practice. That's something Dr. Chaffoo discusses with individuals during the initial complimentary consultation. He makes recommendations based on your description of the goals you envision, combined with a thorough physical assessment.

CoolSculpting doesn't require downtime and is cleared by the FDA to reduce fat in the abdomen, flanks, and thighs. Results appear gradually over the course of several months. Liposuction requires patients to take some time off from work and their normal daily activities because it is a surgical procedure, but it gets more dramatic results that show up immediately.
