About Beard Hair Transplant

A beard hair transplant is a procedure designed to help restore the thickness, density, and coverage of a man’s beard. Dr. Chaffoo can perform this procedure by taking hair grafts from the back of the head and placing them into the jaw, cheek, and chin areas to shape a natural beard. He specifically uses the follicular unit extraction (FUE) method, which is a minimally invasive hair restoration procedure that extracts individual hair follicles from a predetermined donor area. (2) This hair restoration method leaves non-linear scarring that can easily be hidden by both short and long hairstyles, allowing patients to continue to style their hair the way they please!

Benefits

Patients can experience several benefits after undergoing a beard hair transplant, including:

  • Improved Beard Density: This procedure can significantly increase the thickness and volume of an existing beard.
  • Natural-Looking Results: Dr. Chaffoo meticulously places each hair follicle to mimic the existing natural growth pattern, resulting in a seamless blend.
  • Enhanced Facial Aesthetics: A full beard can add to each patient’s overall masculinity and a more youthful-looking appearance.
  • Long-Lasting Results: The results of each procedure are essentially permanent, meaning the transplanted hairs will grow just like normal hair.
  • Customizable Treatment Options: Each beard hair transplant can be tailored to meet the specific requests and style preferences of the patient.
  • Enhanced Confidence: Many patients report a greater sense of self-esteem and confidence following a successful beard restoration, enabling them to present themselves with pride.
  • Minimal Scarring: The FUE method of hair transplantation leaves minimal scarring, which can be easily hidden behind each patient’s hair.

Candidates

Suitable candidates for beard hair transplantation typically include men interested in restoring the fullness and thickness of their facial hair. Candidates may be experiencing thinning, shedding, or patchiness around their jaw, chin, or cheeks. Each patient interested in this procedure will also need to have a sufficient amount of healthy donor hair to harvest, most often from the back of the scalp.

Each candidate interested in beard hair transplantation should be in good health with realistic expectations regarding what this procedure can accomplish. Patients should also be free from any underlying medical conditions that may complicate healing. Patients should be nonsmokers or prepared to quit smoking until they have fully recovered. Dr. Chaffoo will determine each patient’s candidacy during their consultation.

Personal Consultation

Each patient will need to attend a personal consultation at any one of our Southern California locations before scheduling a beard hair transplant. This consultation not only allows Dr. Chaffoo to get to know each individual on a more personal level, but also allows him to tailor each treatment to best help them. The consultation will begin with a series of questions regarding each patient’s medical history, current medications, concerns, and desired results. Dr. Chaffoo may also evaluate each patient’s anatomy and health.

From there, he will craft the patient’s treatment, customizing certain aspects to help each patient achieve their goals. Preparation and recovery instructions will also be provided, as well as a cost estimate. The patient is encouraged to prepare and ask questions, as well as voice any concerns, as we want them to feel confident and informed!

Preparation

Dr. Chaffoo will provide each patient with a set of preparation instructions during their consultation. Patients will likely be advised to discontinue medications and supplements that contain blood-thinning properties. Alcohol should be avoided before and after the procedure, and smoking should be completely ceased weeks in advance. Each patient will also need to arrange transportation home from the procedure, in addition to time away from work to focus on their recovery.

Procedure

Each procedure will begin with the donor area being trimmed before local anesthesia is administered to keep you comfortable. If needed, a sedative may also be utilized. Dr. Chaffoo will begin the procedure by performing FUE to harvest donor grafts. A handheld punch tool will be used to extract healthy follicles from areas of the scalp that are less likely to eventually thin or shed. The number of grafts harvested will depend on the size of the area being treated.

Once the donor grafts are extracted, Dr. Chaffoo will process and clean them as he prepares for reimplantation. During reimplantation, a multitude of tiny, slit-like incisions are made around the jaw and chin to mimic the shape of a full beard. The hair grafts are then meticulously placed to replicate each patient’s hair growth patterns, ensuring the beard will have a natural-looking yet full appearance. The duration of a beard hair transplant can vary, but patients can expect their procedure to last several hours.

Recovery

After their appointment, patients can expect to experience mild swelling or soreness in the treatment area and scalp, but these effects are temporary and may be managed with the use of pain medications. It is recommended that each patient sleep with their head elevated for the first week of healing and avoid certain activities such as swimming or using certain hair products. Patients can typically return to work within several days and resume most of their daily routine by the end of the week, making the recovery process relatively quick. Any further recovery instructions will be discussed and provided by Dr. Chaffoo during the consultation.
